By Abdulqudus Sulaiman

The Amir of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Nigeria, Alh. (Barr.) Alatoye Folorunso Azeez, formally inaugurated the 70th Annual Jalsa Salana (Platinum Jubilee) on Friday, 20th December 2024. The event began with the ceremonial flag-hoisting, followed by Amir Sahib’s thought-provoking inaugural address, centered on the Jalsa’s theme: “And We have not sent thee (O Muhammad) but as a Mercy unto mankind” (Quran 21:108).

In his address, Amir elaborated on the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as a model of compassion, justice, and mercy. He began by emphasizing the oneness of Allah, the cornerstone of Islamic faith. “The Quran teaches that there is only one God, Allah, who is unique and without partners,” he noted, urging members to anchor their lives in the spiritual unity that forms the essence of Islam.

Addressing prevalent misconceptions about Islam, Alh. Alatoye clarified that the religion’s foundation lies in peace and justice. He stated, “The Quran’s overarching message is one of peace, justice, and compassion. Verses mentioning warfare are tied to specific historical contexts and must be understood holistically.” He also highlighted Islam’s commitment to religious freedom, underscoring the importance of respectful interfaith dialogue and fairness in relations with people of other beliefs.

On the topic of equality and brotherhood, He emphasized Islam’s recognition of the spiritual equality of men and women. He encouraged both to strive for righteousness and maintain a deep relationship with Allah. He further pointed out Islam’s respect for other religions and its call for fostering mutual respect while inviting others to its fold.

One of the key highlights of Amir’s address was his clarification on the concept of Jihad, often misunderstood in modern discourse. “Jihad today is about moral excellence and good conduct,” he explained. “It is a personal struggle to become a sincere follower of God Almighty, not about physical combat but about overcoming personal weaknesses and striving for virtue.” He urged attendees to embody the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), reflecting the values of mercy and compassion in their daily lives.

Amir concluded by connecting the teachings of Islam to the theme of the Jalsa, urging members to embrace the principles of peaceful propagation and exemplary behavior. He remarked, “The true essence of modern-day Jihad lies in living as shining examples of Islamic teachings and spreading its message of peace through actions and words.”

His inspiring address set the tone for the convention, leaving attendees motivated to recommit to the mission of peaceful propagation, moral excellence, and the exemplification of Islam’s universal message of mercy and compassion.
